Course Description
For the past couple of years online social networks have been playing an increasing role in students' lives. In this practical course participants will study the impact of such online social networks on students at the University of Göttingen, as well as the structure, dynamics, and focus of regional online communities and discussions within these comminuties.
This course is organized in collaboration with the Institute for Sociology and will be co-located and co-organized with the sociology seminar "Virtuelle soziale Netzwerke".
Course Goals
Participants in this course should expect to get familiar with:
- The field of Social Network Analysis (SNA)
- Topics and challenges in social network analysis
- Understanding and modeling social networks
- Mining of social networks
- Data evaluation and visualization
- Work in an interdisciplinary environment
Course Requirements
Participants should have a strong motivation and interest in the subject of the practical course and be prepared and willing to work in an interdisciplinary environment. In addition, sufficient and usable proficiency in the following technical skills is highly desirable:
- Java, Python (optional)
- Databases and data persistence (SQL, XML)
- Quantitative evaluation methods
- Optional: GUI (SWT) and 2D (Processing) may come in handy
